The Indianapolis Colts…An Exciting Team To Watch
The story of the Indianapolis Colts dates back to 1946 when a little team called the Miami Seahawks joined the All-American Football Conference (AFC). After winning just three games that season, the team was bankrupt and sold. The new owners moved the team to Baltimore Maryland and renamed them the Colts. They played in the AFC until the league merged with the NFL in 1950. In 1951, the franchise was dissolved because of their long time failings with money.
For two years, there was no Baltimore team. Then, in 1953, the league made a deal with the owner of the Colts that if they could sell 15,000 tickets in six weeks they could have a team. In just over four weeks, all of the tickets were sold and the Dallas Texans were moved to Baltimore and renamed.
In 1984, the Colts were moved to Indianapolis, making them the Indianapolis Colts. Issues between the franchise owner and the city of Baltimore over facilities for the team, prompted the move. The stadium that was being used was outdated and needed improvements as well as more seating.
After long deliberations and several refused proposals on both sides, Baltimore’s legislature passed a law giving the city the right to seize ownership of the franchise. As a result, the deliberations with the city of Indianapolis that had been ongoing were rushed, and the team packed up all of their belongings and left in the middle of the night, taking several different routes to keep from being prevented from leaving by the Maryland police.
The team then went on to win 90 of their games in the first three years in Indianapolis. They were the first team in the history of the NFL to win twelve games or more in seven consecutive seasons and are the only team to have beaten all of the other teams in the league at least once.
In 1954, while they were still the Baltimore Colts, two fans started the first NFL cheerleading squad. The Colts cheerleaders began with ten girls, some of whom were married with children. When the team moved, the cheerleaders went with them. Although there were a few years where there were no cheerleaders, the program is going full steam and has been for 25 years. Colts cheerleaders, aside from cheering at games, make several public appearances throughout the year and donate a lot of time to charity.
Although they have had quite an extraordinary past, the Indianapolis Colts are among the teams to watch in the NFL. They play great football, consistently win games, and are adored by their fans.
